Our property is about a one-hour drive from the Kona airport. There aren't ride sharing services available in North Kohala, so we strongly recommend renting a vehicle in Kona when your flight lands. Google Maps is the best at getting you to our property (52-4705 Akoni Pule Hwy, Kapa’au HI 96755). Here are printable directions, as well.
In general, the Big Island is very casual, so you shouldn't need any dressy clothing. Our property has two washer/dryers as well as toiletries, hair dryers, snorkel gear, floats/noodles, towels, first aid kids, etc. But here are some things you might want to bring:
Yes! Our internet is reliable and fast. We'll provide you with the login information at checkin.
Absolutely! The homes are set up perfectly to accommodate families with children of all ages. We have great backyard & lawn space to run around, as well as many supplies for family fun - beach gear, board games, books, yard games, etc. We can supply pack-n-plays and high chairs upon request, too.
No. The Last Resort is in a fairly rural area and we do not have mail delivery. There are hardware and grocery stores in our area that might have what you need. If not, Kona and Hilo have many big box retail stores.
In our opinion, Big Island Revealed ($14.99 on Amazon) is the best travel guide for exploring the Big Island. In addition, we frequently share Hawaii vacation recommendations and tips on our blog and Instagram.
If you start driving South from our property, you’ll stumble over about 10 beaches within 50 miles. Check out our blog post, Best Beaches on the Island of Hawai'i for the full download and a map.
There are several options for filling up the pantry when you arrive. First, one of the concierge services we offer is fridge stocking prior to your arrival (inquire: rentals@bigislandlastresort.com). Second, there are grocery stores, a Target, and a Costco in Kona that you can stop at before driving North to our property. Last, there are several grocery shopping options nearby: Takata, Kohala Grown Market and of course, farmers markets!
Each of our kitchens were recently gutted and rebuilt using top-of-the-line appliances. All three kitchens have everything you need to cook for your group - from Ninja blenders to tea kettles to All-clad cookware and Williams Sonoma dishes & cooking tools. We also keep them stocked with olive oil and basic spices. Watch these sneak peek videos of our Banyan House and Mango House kitchens.
North Kohala is known for the best weather on the Big Island! When you land in Kona, it will be hot with no breeze, but you'll find cooler temps and more shade in our region. Our average daytime temps range from 70-85 degrees. Nights can be slightly cooler with temperatures in the 60's. We recommend bringing a light sweatshirt, jacket or rain layer. Most of the time, North Kohala has a pleasant breeze, as we're famous for our "Kohala winds." During winter months (Nov-April) we tend to get more rainfall than the drier months of summer. We are on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, so keep in mind our weather can always change quickly!
Our cancellation policies are intended to be fair to both our guests, as well as our property managers and cleaners who rely on bookings to support their families. Please see each Airbnb listing for the respective cancellation policies as they differ based on the size of the unit: Bamboo Suite, Banyan House, Mango House, Banyan+Bamboo Combo, Entire Estate.
